An Explanation
NEUROLOGISTS are physicians who by their training and experience have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or injuries to the brain, spinal cord, or nerves. Neurologists do not perform surgery, and when surgery is indicated, the patient is referred to a neurosurgeon.

Diseases or injuries that could lead to such brain damage include head trauma, closed head injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's Disease, anoxia, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), alcohol intoxication, etc.
